Advanced Stages of Jala Neti - Stage 2
Please note that we recommend this advanced stage of Jala Neti should be learned under a qualified and experienced yoga master.
Stage 2 of Jala Neti (or Vyutkrama Kapalbhati Neti) works more on clearing out the posterior sinus passages which Stage 1 does not reach and is even more effective than Stage 1 for post nasal drip, sinusitis, snoring, chronic catarrh, thyroid imbalances, coughs and throat problems.
For your information, we have detailed the practice below. It is suggested and recommended that expert guidance be given, it has been known to be successfully practised unaided and we leave this choice with you.
First Stage 1 needs to be practised on one side, although the complete drying process need not be completed, simply a quick blowing will be sufficient.
Fill the Neti pot again and start to take the solution into your nasal passage again, but while the solution is running through, it is drawn into the back of the throat and spat out. It is easiest to take one long gentle sniff (which creates a sort of bubbling feeling) while using the tongue to close the throat as much as possible. This is difficult to describe but is similar to slow and long snorting!
Once the some solution is in the mouth, exhale while spitting it out. Then repeat until the pot is empty.
DO NOT use sharp snorts to draw the solution into our mouth as this may result in solution being taken into the ear tubes and sinuses.
Repeat the whole process, starting with Stage 1, on the other side.
Be careful not to swallow the solution when it is drawn into the mouth (not dangerous but unpleasant!).
Take extra time and care in completing the drying process as described in Stage 1 as the solution floods the nasal passages a lot more and may cause irritation for some time if not completely dried out. This drying process can be completed as many times as required.
Advanced Stages - Stage 3 (Brief description only)
The third stage or method is a little more difficult and advanced again.
This is called Sheetkrama Kapalbhati. Here the warm salty water is taken in
through the mouth and snorted out the nose. This is quite tricky at first and
may be a little uncomfortable in the beginning. The benefits are similar yet
stronger than the other forms of Neti. It is done after a potful of Stages 1 & 2.
Again care must be taken to dry the nasal passages properly, and again, this
stage of Neti should be supervised by a teacher on the first few attempts.
