The Ancient Method of Nasal Rinsing Really Works For Congestion During Pregnancy

How did I ever find myself suggesting that washing one’s nose can actually be therapeutic? It all started when I left the hippie commune to attend medical school. Of course I learned the traditional theories of medicine but always had an ear towards natural remedies. When prescribing medications for my patients in private practice, I found myself pressured to prescribe antibiotics and antihistamines. The actual prescription was as easy as writing on a piece of paper but I considered each one very seriously. I tried to take the time with my patients and share the art of nasal washing. Over time it became clear to me that those who heeded my recommendation of nasal washing needed my services less and less. I felt successful.
I have found the following to be absolute truths: Exposure to irritants can include allergens, pollution, debris, bacteria, and viruses, smoke. These irritants can cause swelling of the mucus membranes, increase in mucus production, cause thicker and stickier mucus build-up, backup of the normal flow of secretions, and a decrease in the filtering function of the nose. Simply put, the irritants cause the nose to not function as intended, the body’s filter. Numerous scientific studies supported my experiences in the clinic. It is well known that hypertonic saline (saltier than the body) is most effective nasal membrane wash. Hypertonic saline removes particles, shrinks nasal membranes, improves the nose filtering system, thins secretions, and opens the tiny sinus openings. Nasal washing also can reduce the need for medications as well as decreasing the number of infections. It has been shown to decrease congestion, infection, and the use of medication! So why aren’t more doctors recommending this simply procedure?
Pregnancy is a time when everything is special, everything is pure and most everyone agrees to avoid medications whenever possible. There is a common condition in pregnancy called ‘pregnancy rhinitis. This increased nasal congestion is a direct response to the fact that pregnancy itself causes a 40% increase in blood flow. Most agree that medication use in pregnancy is never a good idea unless absolutely necessary. Therefore, pregnant women should be educated regarding nasal rinsing as a treatment option for congestion. It is simple, safe and effective, but most importantly, it can not do harm.
